Birchwood Pages

Slow notes on books, walks and small things worth keeping.

Rereading Walden, slowly

September 12, 2026

The first time I read it quickly, as a book to have read. This time it is ten pages a morning with a pencil and coffee, and no plan to finish by any particular date.

What stands out now is how practical it is. The chapter on economy is mostly arithmetic: what the house cost, what the beans brought in, what he did without.

I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately.

The famous lines are still there, but the lists are what stay with me.
